Speed and agility in any sport, is one of the most potent weapons an athlete can possess. The speed to drive past an opponent, the agility to change direction at pace.
The power to push past an opponent and get to the contest first.
And while every child may not be born with natural speed, every child can become quicker with the right technique training.
Speed and the right technique is the fundamental grounding for any sports person. And the best time to begin is early in life, in the years before the bad habits set in and the risks of injury from poor technique are most pronounced.
This is why Quikstep was created.
I have over 20 years of coaching experience. My own sporting background includes triathlon, cycling and sprinting. I have coached both National and State level champion runners. Regardless of the sport or the athlete I have coached, I have always maintained that speed must be the fundamental grounding for each sport.
I have observed the way junior sports teams are coached. The focus is almost universally on team play and ball skills. And that makes perfect sense. There is only so many minutes in a session. But it also leaves a skill deficiency. A deficiency that cannot be corrected with adhoc speed advice and tips at the end of a training session. Speed coaching only works when the focus is 100 percent speed. My focus, for duration of every session, is dedicated solely to speed development.

The first thing I do is observe.
This means getting a video of your child running at top speed over 20 metres.
This serves three purposes.
Firstly, it gives me an immediate reference point for where your child is and what needs to be focused on in the short term. Obvious deficiencies can be corrected quickly. For example, too much head wobble or a lazy arm.
It also allows your child to see exactly what I am referring to.
Finally, the 20 metre sprint gives me a base time from which we can measure their progress over 6 weeks.
20 metre speed is universally regarded as the fundamental yard stick in elite level ball sports.
In basketball, it is arguably the most critical asset as so much of the game depends on explosive power.
After this each session is broken into three parts.
Warm up
Technique drills.
Speed reps.
While the fundamentals listed above remain consistent in each session, no two sessions are exactly the same.
I use speed sleds, low level hurdles, speed parachutes, agility ladders and agility poles.
The sessions are short and sharp.
I do not waste time with long winded coach talks.
The emphasis is on doing and learning with each session taking 50 mins.
I provide constant feedback.
This keeps the kids brains buzzing and ensures they look forward to each session.
Unlike long endurance sessions that I have seen burn kids out, speed work is by its very nature far more enjoyable and less taxing on the mind and the body.
